Frequency references for quantum sensing outside the laboratory

Overtone Photonics is an early-stage UK research and development company. We are developing compact, environmentally robust laser frequency references built on atomic spectroscopy.

The problem we work on

Quantum sensors are moving from optical benches into the field. Atomic gravimeters, magnetometers, optical clocks and Rydberg RF sensors all depend on lasers held to a precise, absolute frequency. In a temperature- controlled laboratory this is a solved problem. On a vehicle, an aircraft or a ship it is not.

Our work is on the reference itself: the atomic frequency standard a laser is locked to, packaged so that it survives vibration, temperature swings and stray magnetic fields without losing lock.

Current status

We are at prototype stage and actively seeking research collaborations and early evaluation partners. If your group or programme needs a frequency reference that current commercial options do not provide, we would like to hear from you.
